A Milky Way Night Over Auroras
The sky looks delicious (!). This photo was taken by Göran Strand in Östersund, Sweden, last week. Green auroras, resembling a mushroom rising from the ground into the sky, are caused by the interaction of light with oxygen in the atmosphere. Oxygen can produce red auroras in addition to green. If ionized nitrogen is present in the atmosphere, you'll see blue auroras. Above, we see the magnificent Milky Way galaxy stretching from left to right.
