Do Bigots Always Win?
Why do I ask this question? It's something I've been thinking about for a long time, but perhaps I've been hesitant to express. Because I don't want to accept such a possibility either. First, let me explain how I came to this conclusion.
A short while ago “The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy” I finished the book. While the first two books were good, I didn't like the last three. While the first two books had the excitement of the radio play, I didn't see that excitement in the last three books. It's like "This is good, let's write more" It was as if they had said so. In this book, we have familiar characters: Arthur and Ford. In the second book, there's a dialogue between these two and Slartibartfast about saving the universe. I want to write it as it is (I found it right away with a quick search of the benefits of Kindle and e-books...).
“The truth is,” he said, “people like you and me, people like Slartibartfast and Arthur—especially and chiefly Arthur—we might call ourselves, whether we like it or not, superficial, eccentric, rambling idlers.”
Slartibartfast frowned, a little confused and a little annoyed. He began to speak.
He couldn't go further than "..."
"We don't give a damn about anything, okay?" Ford insisted.
“…”
"And that's the driving factor. We can't defeat fanaticism. They care, we don't. They're the ones who win."
These lines had become etched in a corner of my memory, occasionally disturbing me. I could see the resemblance. Every once in a while, I tried to deny the similarity and break it, but I grew weary and lost.
Of course, bigotry can be related to anything, but I need to describe the image that comes to mind. When I study the history of science, I see the battle between scientific enlightenment and those who oppose it (the bigots) in every civilization. For the most part, the non-fanatics have lost. As dedicated scientists and philosophers, I'd like to point out the reason why they've won over the last three centuries, but I can't. There's only one reason: they've benefited people. Scientific advancements have benefited them in every field, and that's why, even now, governments are allocating resources to areas that benefit them (especially weapons).
We, who claim to be intellectuals, have never cared like fanatics, and we never will. We will never engage in collective work like fanatics. We have destroyed the hopes and aspirations of those who cared and engaged in collective work. Those who remained have continued to pose as heroes not because they cared, but for their own gain.
Being a hero is actually very easy…
Let me answer my question. There's nothing to gain, actually. Since there's nothing to gain, there can be no winners.
