California Nebula and Pleiades Star Cluster
On the left side of this shot, we see the California nebula known as NGC 1499, and on the right, the Pleiades star cluster (though it does remind me of a Greek name :)). This isn't the nebula's true color; the blue color on the right is the result of hydrogen atoms ionized by the star Xi Persei, creating this image.
The California nebula is 60 light-years across and 1,500 light-years away. The Pleiades star cluster is 15 light-years across and 400 light-years away. The blue light is due to the reflection of the stars' light by interstellar dust.
