NASA Scientists Answer Your Curious Questions About Voyager 1

Launched on September 5, 1977, the Voyager 1 spacecraft left the solar system and crossed into interstellar space two days ago. This spacecraft, which has been in service for 36 years, has revealed many unknowns and became the first satellite to visit Jupiter and Saturn, taking detailed photographs of the planets and their moons. The Voyager 1 spacecraft is the farthest spacecraft ever created by humankind.

Saturn's Rings in Infrared

Saturn and its rings, captured in infrared by the Cassini spacecraft. Saturn is the sixth planet in the solar system and the second largest. It is classified as a gas giant because it has no solid surface. Despite its size, its mass and density are low. In fact, its density is so low that if we were to place Saturn in water, it would float. It is composed mostly of hydrogen and helium.

Can Anything Move Faster Than Light?

The universe itself is expanding faster than light. But this doesn't violate relativity's constancy of the speed of light. Because there's no motion involved, how this could happen is a bit complicated, so let's start from the beginning: the Big Bang. Approximately 13.8 billion years ago, all matter in the universe was hurled in all directions. This initial explosion is still causing the universe to expand. Scientists […]

A Message from Astronaut Robot Kirobo

On August 21, 2013, Kirobo became the first robot to speak in space. Equipped with voice-recognition software from Toyota, the astronaut robot sent a hello message and pictures to Earth. Kirobo arrived at the ISS (International Space Station) in early August. Next year, Kirobo will participate in the first human-robot communication in space. The robot was developed by the Kiro Robot […]

Scientists Create Mini Human Brain

Biomedical scientists have used stem cells to create a naturally developing mini-human brain the size of a pea. This is the best living model yet developed. Jüergen Knoblich of the Austrian Academy of Molecular Biotechnology and Sciences in Vienna noted that testing the mini-brains on animals is not feasible, saying, “The mouse brain does not offer a good model system for the human brain… The system we developed […]
