Sail Supernova Remnant
The Vela Supernova Remnant, located in the direction of Vela in the Southern Hemisphere, is the remnants of a supernova explosion from a dying star. The light from the supernova explosion first hit the remnant and reached Earth approximately 12,000 years ago. This means the supernova explosion is estimated to have occurred approximately 11,000 to 13,000 years ago. At the same time, the Vela Pulsar, a neutron star, formed within the remnants following the supernova explosion.
The Vela supernova remnant, located about 800 light-years away, lies within the larger and older Gum Nebula. NGC 2736, the Pencil Nebula, is also within the Vela supernova remnant.
