Will Mars Travelers Never Return to Earth?

Landing on Mars is tough, but returning to Earth is even tougher, especially if the red planet's explorers catch a cold on the journey.

Sick astronauts could contract infections on Mars in some sections of the spacecraft that are on life support. Earth may be reluctant to welcome such travelers, as they may carry a disease that could cause extraterrestrial super-pandemics.

NASA is already considering this issue for humans expected to orbit Mars in the mid-2030s. "The key is to ensure rigorous health screening of astronauts throughout every phase of a Mars mission and deep space mission," said Cassie Conley, a NASA Earth Protection officer.

"The important thing is to be able to determine that these are not exotic diseases that came from Mars, because this is completely normal and we expect something like this to happen. We saw this when we went to the Moon and when we went to an asteroid, and there is nothing that can be done against Martian disease. Of course, NASA will do its best to minimize the potential Martian organisms that astronauts take with them.
